What is Base64?
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme defined by RFC 4648 that converts binary data into a set of 64 ASCII characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /). It is NOT encryption — it is fully reversible and requires no key. Base64 is commonly used for MIME email, Data URLs, JWT payloads, and embedding binary resources in JSON/XML.
How does Base64 work?
Base64 processes input data in 3-byte (24-bit) blocks, splitting each block into four 6-bit groups. Each 6-bit value maps to one of 64 characters. If the input length is not divisible by 3, padding (=) is appended. UTF-8 text is first encoded to bytes before Base64 encoding.

Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it without a key. It converts binary to text for transport compatibility, not for security.
Why does Base64 make data larger?
Base64 encodes every 3 bytes into 4 characters, causing a ~33% size increase. This overhead is the trade-off for text-only compatibility.
