HTTP status codes are grouped by leading digit: 1xx informational, 2xx success, 3xx redirection, 4xx client error, and 5xx server error. 401 means missing or invalid credentials while 403 means authenticated but not permitted. 304 enables conditional requests by telling caches the representation is still fresh.
